It’s like the gift guides at Christmas, everyone likes to launch their take on the Top Summer Reads out into the Blogosphere. And look, I enjoy contemporary romance novels in Summer as much as the next person, but you won’t find any of those among my own Summer reading recommendations.
Weird & Wonderful
Have you ever read The Hitchhiker’s Galaxy by Douglas Adams? How about anything by Terry Prachett, Tom Holt, or even Kurt Vonnegut? For the most part these novels are pretty short so you can pick them up on a sunny weekend afternoon and they will transport you places you never even knew existed.
The Amusing Autobiography
I’m talking Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling. Reading about smart, driven, funny women is always a good thing and is only improved through sitting out in the garden with a cold drink. Mindy Kaling’s first book is my recommendation, or, you know, perhaps even her second when it’s released later in the year.
Not as much commitment required as when starting a novel, but with just as fantastic characters, fast paced dialogue, and intriguing plots. Believe me – there is a comic for everyone; whether you end up choosing an artsy graphic novel, the first volume in a manga series, or the trusty standby of your favourite superhero. My personal recommendation is Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye series because not only is it amazing, but the fourth and final trade paperback volume is finally slated for release this summer.
